Greenpoint Sans is a self-initiated typeface by New York–based designer Sasha Denisova, inspired by the storefronts and brick façades of Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood. It began as a personal archive of typographic ephemera—built through an ongoing process of photographing and cataloguing local signage—before evolving into a fully realized type design family that translates vernacular lettering into a contemporary digital system.
Rather than recreating individual signs, the project distills the recurring visual patterns found throughout the neighborhood. Historic storefronts across Brooklyn and New York were often constrained by narrow building frontages, resulting in condensed lettering designed to maximize visibility within limited architectural space. Those practical considerations became the foundation of the typeface, informing its compact proportions, dense texture, and confident rhythm.

Balancing utilitarian function with contemporary refinement, Greenpoint Sans features restrained contrast, compact apertures, relaxed curves, lowered crossbars, and subtle rounded terminals that echo hand-painted and fabricated storefront lettering without imitating it. A defining characteristic is its variable slant axis, spanning upright, forward italic, and reverse italic styles—the reverse slant reinterpreting the unconventional angles frequently found in neighborhood signage. The family also supports both Latin and Cyrillic scripts, Small Caps, and a growing set of display-oriented alternates.

Alongside the typeface, Denisova produced a risograph-printed specimen zine documenting the signage that inspired the project—less a traditional specimen than a visual archive of Brooklyn’s disappearing typographic landscape. By connecting physical observation with digital typography, Greenpoint Sans positions type as both a functional tool and a form of cultural documentation. The family is released under a Creative Commons license, free for both personal and commercial use.
