Too Much To Watch — Studio Kiln's crowded, colourful identity for the RTS Cambridge Convention 2023

Studio Kiln was commissioned by 4creative to create the brand identity, motion graphics, event graphics and programme design for the Royal Television Society Cambridge Convention 2023. This year's event, titled Too Much To Watch, was chaired by Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon, and brought together over 350 industry figureheads for two days of discussion on the future of media, the impact of AI, and the role of opinion in news.

Inspired by the core topic of the event, Studio Kiln created an identity that playfully explored the idea of a crowded screen. Each letter, word and phrase competes for attention, imitating the dizzying array of content viewers and broadcasters have to navigate. The bubbly, balloon-like letterforms inflated to fill screens, book covers, windows and pillars — creating a delightfully overwhelming experience in an electric mix of green, pink, burgundy and orange.

The identity had to adapt to multiple touchpoints across spatial design, print, motion and merchandise. Balloon letters filled everything from session title cards and side panels to display cabinets, window vinyls, and the foil-embossed programme guide — whose letters push out of the page as if inflated from within.

The convention was attended by keynote speakers including ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall, BBC Director General Tim Davie, Emma Thompson, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and James Corden. The 2023 event marked a dramatic shift in ambition for the RTS — a vibrant and contemporary visual identity that provided an optimistic backdrop to a thought-provoking programme on the future of broadcast.
