Transport for Wales — How Algo built a generative motion tool for rail

This rebrand for the railway company of Wales is all about travel lines — and a generative tool by Algo makes it scalable within the organization.

Cardiff-based branding studio Uned created a multimodal brand system and partnered with Algo to develop a bespoke generative design tool enabling teams across the client organization to create brand assets while preserving strict brand consistency.

For a large organization like TfW, rolling out a brand at scale is a major challenge. As brand guardians, Uned Studio wanted to protect the identity while making it accessible to non-designers. The result is a branded creative tool that lets anyone on the team produce on-brand visuals without technical skills.

At the core of the system is the T Network — a unified transport system connecting rail, bus, walking, and cycling. This translates into “Travel Lines,” a graphic element inspired by maps, where colored gradients follow paths to express movement and connection.

To achieve this, Algo built a custom WebGL-based solution, as standard tools couldn’t properly render gradients along paths. The system relies on a precise grid where lines stack in a pixel-perfect structure, constrained to 45° and 90° angles.

Branded creative tools like this enable teams to produce assets quickly while freeing internal creative teams from repetitive work, allowing them to focus on higher-value creative tasks.

The tool also includes generative features. Alongside a set of prebuilt layouts, users can generate infinite new Travel Lines compositions with a randomize function, balancing flexibility with brand control. Additional controls allow teams to adjust layout, motion, and appearance within defined guidelines.
